Self Defence

Dawn's graceful movements as she practiced her kata was something Spike never tired of watching.

"I can't believe you want to give Rachel weapons training."

"You saw what happened last week." Dawn grabbed a towel and wiped the sweat from her eyes. "She took down a demon."

"Accidentally. You could have both been killed."

Rachel was brilliant when it came to research and had the office demons wrapped around her finger, but was an utter klutz. Spike shuddered at the thought of arming the woman. It was a recipe for disaster.

"How about we teach her defensive magic skills instead?"

How bizzare, i was just talking katas with someone two seconds ago. And i just this morning found a Kendo club in my area i'm going to try out! You are so in tune. :P

We're either in tune or my stock response to anything is to hit it with a stick. Now why am I not involved in Kendo?

Now why am I not involved in Kendo?

no idea, judgement lapse on your part? :P i'd more happily learn something that used blades, but kendo gives some chances for that with competition and display i understand.
do you study any kind of martial arts?

do you study any kind of martial arts?

No. My partner got into Hap Ki Do for a while and use to get me to do the practice blocking moves, but I found it too easy to block and lost interest.

if you're anything like me i reckon you'd be suited to kickboxing. no-holds-barred real exertion stuff, i need to get back into it. the boxing gloves annoyed me though, i preferred the thin pads we used in karate full-contact sparring, but hardly any clubs ever do sparring with karate any more, they're all too scared of being sued when someone gets a bruise. >:(

Beautiful. I love the image of Dawn doing katas while Spike watches.

Thanks! It seemed appropriate.

For the record, I would like to point out that Rachel has no cooking skills whatsoever and can only follow a recipe if it's so precise it leaves no possible room for error. Give her even the slightest margin of uncertainty and the chicken will dry out, the cake will collapse, and the rice will burn.* As the ultimate proof of her lack in the kitchen area, Rachel will gladly tell you about the time she screwed up the easiest thing in the world, Kraft Dinner! She still does not know what she did wrong to turn macaroni & cheese into cheese-flavoured modelling clay. (It made an excellent replica of the Eiffel Tower, by the way.)

That said, if any of the "defensive magic skills" require the use of potions? Get someone else to make them or be prepared for a rising rate of explosions and accompanying expletives. Also, don't forget to factor in the cost of increased emergency room visits and recouperating time at home.

Preferably with Declán there to pamper to her every need. Ahem!

* these are real examples of Moon's most common cooking attempts. they never work, but for some silly reason she keeps trying...
29th Aug, 2006 21:25 (UTC)
Oh dear. I think I shall have to assume that Declàn has been doing to cooking around Rachel, otherwise they would have known that culinary skills may well match her martial self defence skills for terror inspiring outcomes. We may be seeing more of this.

Rachel with weapons? *runs and hides* Spike's reaction made me giggle.
29th Aug, 2006 23:52 (UTC)
Running and hiding may be a wise idea indeed.
30th Aug, 2006 03:17 (UTC)
Rachel with magic? That could be just as scary as Rachel with sharp weapons, particularly with her sense of humor. It could also be very cool.

What happens next???
30th Aug, 2006 03:27 (UTC)
I don't know where this will go. I suspect it will turn up in another drabble sooner or later.
30th Aug, 2006 15:49 (UTC)
I'm with Spike. I can only imagine what sort of damage *I* would do with an edged or pointed weapon.
30th Aug, 2006 21:30 (UTC)
Me being in the possession of edged weapons is usually enough scare people.
30th Aug, 2006 22:29 (UTC)
Well, if you scare them and they run away, that pretty much solves the problem. I can scare them away just by announcing I'm doing home maintenance chores.
30th Aug, 2006 20:20 (UTC)
Can she aim straight? Because if she can't - bad back notwithstanding - I'm rolling breakfall myself out the way.
30th Aug, 2006 21:31 (UTC)
It may not be the aiming, so much as culinary cluelessness screwing up anything that needs a potion prepared.
